I remember myself always creating: painting, making legos, making lines on any borrowed blackboard. Illustrating the school summaries and then the text comments, filling in the margins of the notebooks with «machangos» … Afterwards, life took me along the necessary path to sustain myself but I always missed my artistic side, which I was looking for in the way of fitting it into the busy day to day … and I found a way to give it space, drawing self-taught with the help of books, taking painting classes, writing … Experimenting. And by the heck of fate, I was able to dedicate all my time to learn, and that’s what I did: I started attending o workshops with admired artists until I applied to the Society of Botanical Artists to study a diploma with them. I finished in May 2019 after a lot of effort. And without respite I have continued doing what I like the most, illustrating nature.

I have participated in an illustration project of Macaronesian elements with the invaluable help of the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden. In 2022 I become Fellow Member of the Society of Botanical Artists. I have been with some pieces in small exhibitions until now, that I have arrived with three works, to the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid, in the exhibition They illustrate botany. It is an honor for me.

I believe that knowledge is what makes us love things and take care of them, and my small intention by showing our natural wealth through my paintings, is to get closer, and that we respect and take care of the wonder that is our Earth.

About what I do

«Do what you can’t stop doing.» Now I dedicate most of my time to Botanical and Natural history Illustration. The watercolor technique used for this purpose is very demanding, even in the materials, which are very specific. It is a job that requires a lot of attention and concentration. It allows me to recreate myself in Nature and for my eyes to spend a lot of time observing the beauty that it gives us, in the form of seeds, plants, a feather or the eye of an animal. I express my respect for our ecosystem by drawing what it offers us. I try to do my best not only for a matter of technique but also out of veneration for that wonderful and perfect beings that I have in front of me.

In addition, the objects that I illustrate and the very process of the technique that I make with watercolor make me manage time in a very special way, because having a living being in front of me, compels me to attend their times … the plants are alive , they change, they move, they are sensitive to light. This forces me to be very concentrated observing … and at the same time forget the rush since the work is so meticulous that any small mistake can end up with months of preparation.

Taking the Diploma at the SBA has been a very intense experience that has put me at a very different skill level from when I started. I have studied a lot and got a lot of books on the subject that I have used for reference and that continue to support me when I start a work.

Taking a botanical work to the level of a scientific illustration with all the observation and accuracy it takes is one of thing I truly love. 

Sharing my knowledge with people interested in learning such an antique technique (and so contemporary nowdays) is such a joy.

As it is a very lonely job, I find it necessary to participate in workshops with other artists, at least once a year. You learn from your tutors, and from your students. Learning illustration at this level shows me that it is a path whose horizon seems to be close but is not fully reached. There are always areas for improvement, new topics … this situation of continuing to learn keeps me highly motivated.
